Shock News: The Weekly Round Up 26/10
This week, on the Shock News show, Noah, Luca and Adam discussed the latest
national, international and local headlines.
Starting with the top story of the weekend, they discussed Storm ‘Boelo’, which has
left 82,000 homes without power, down from 344,000 houses earlier in the day. This
storm follows the tamer storm ‘Austen’.
The U.K. continues to find itself amid extreme weather conditions, with the extreme
heat we faced in summer leaving 2,000 dead, raising questions about the lack of
action against climate change.
Climate change has become a trend on social media, but once an incident like the
wildfire, passes, their focus shifts back to economic issues. Many people feel a
hopelessness within the tight economic climate, with a lack of jobs and pressure
building; caring about climate change is not on their agenda.
In political news, former defence secretary who resigned over poor defence
spending, Chancellor John Healey, will present the Budget explaining the
government’s plans to manage public finances.
How tight they’re going to be sticking to the strict spending rules set by Rachel Rees
to attempt to not bring on more government debt will be a focus, as well as energy
prices and the defence budget.
This may be the first real test Andy Burnham has faced since his stint on Google Box
aiming to raise money for charity.
The freedom of movement within the EU has also been discussed this week, with
Andy Burnham confirming in an interview with The Times he would be open to the
idea despite the significant challenges associated with it.
The type of immigration proposed would allow people to come and then go, a
revolving-door immigration which is different to traditional immigration the
government promised to cut down on.
EU free movement means British nationals being able to live and work in the EU,
and the residents coming into the UK being able to live and work here. This idea is
part of a 10-year plan being worked on.
In international news, we are just a week away from the mid-term start of November.
It’s been a feisty mid-term campaign across the country. It's a battle for Congress,
and it could tip the balance of power.
We're now at the midpoint of the Trump term too, and so far he has been ruling with an
iron fist. Obama has returned to the campaign trail, endorsing Democratic
candidates, including Abdullah Sayed. Meanwhile, Republican candidates are
investing heavily in campaigning, with some facing criticism over personal attacks
against their opponents.
John Healey is set to announce a £7m fund to examine the potential of hosting the
Olympics in northern England. In an already sport mad city, hosting the Olympics
could be economically transformative.
In other news, Salford has fallen victim to 50 HMO attacks in the past few weeks with
windows being smashed, doors ripped on hinges and graffiti on the walls. Despite
the rumour that these houses are filled with illegal immigrants most of these are used
as student housing and young professionals.
The show finished up talking about the affect Nigel Farage has had on the population
of the U.K’s opinions towards immigrants and the many who struggle to create their
own opinion.
