Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has been blocked from standing in the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election. The Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) voted 8-1 against Burnham standing in the contest.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has asked permission from Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to stand in the Gorton and Denton by-election. Burnham, who was previously MP for Leigh between 2001 and 2017, insisted that he wanted to back government in Westminster, “not undermine it.”
